Final Proofreading Projects

These older items are now getting their final polishing before receiving 'Official' status and being made readily available to the community.

The 'Original Working Locations' columns below point to the uploads of various LTI members and have multiple translations already 'in progress' or completed. While these uploads are not necessarily tied directly to the Linguistic Team or within our primary dotSUB account, all translation tasks should continue to be handled at those locations. We have no wish to disrupt any existing dotSUB efforts started by anyone else. Unless the dotSUB Dashboard forces us to use only a single account for everything, we will do everything possible to adhere to this approach even after the Dashboard is introduced to the Movement.

To ensure the full integrity of the materials we release to our activists & the public, the path to getting the transcriptions and translations of any video into the official Video Repository (and Dashboard) is for them to pass through the Linguistic Team's collaborative system's approach, which focuses on very careful proofreading by both the English and Translation Proofreading Teams once the transcription &/or translation tasks have been completed (Note: the English transcription is always first and must be fully proofread before the item is opened up for translation). In order for the proofreaders to 'finalize' these items without interruption and provide their guarantee that this is the best that we can create, specific measures will be taken to protect the transcription and translations from the outside world during these proofreading stages.

Please note: This page is under reconstruction to bring the info up to date.  :)

Using the Permissions settings built into dotSUB, along with the My Groups feature, this task is very easy to handle within the LTI dotSUB account. Individual Groups are created for each Language Team, which are then populated with the dotSUB usernames of all of the proofreaders in that team. When the time comes for proofreading an item, Permission is restricted only to members of that group, to allow them to work in peace. The moment they are done with it, the transcription or translation is locked down to everyone but the uploader and the language's Coordinator at the 'working location' and Imported into the Repository, along with all other completed translations of the video.

In order to preserve the original upload 'working locations', one partial solution here is for dotSUB uploaders to provide the LTI account with what is called 'Full Access' to the videos we are translating, so that these items can be fully proofread by all language teams in their original upload locations.

Unfortunately, most uploaders do not use their LTI forum username within dotSUB, so it is often difficult to figure out who they are or how to contact them to request this ability. I will be creating a page, linked from here, that will list the dotSUB usernames of the uploaders we need to contact, so that anyone who recognizes them can get in touch with them and ask that they get in touch with the LingTeam. Let's strive to bring all of our efforts together and finally get all of these very important videos finalized

If contact/cooperation with the original uploader is simply not possible, we will have little choice but to create a new instance of the item and request that all teams continue their efforts at the new 'working location' instead of the original upload, since this will become the only way to ensure the integrity of the transcriptions and translations prior to presenting them to the world in the Repository. All other efforts will be exhausted before resorting to this measure.

All properly completed transcriptions and translations within this Final Proofreading project will be made available to the entire RBE community and beyond in the Dashboard Repository account and populated with the transcription and translations imported from the Working Location in order to provide a protected environment for this incredibly important task of careful proofreading. The moment that a transcription or translation is declared 'as good as we can make them' by that language's Proofreading Team, that transcription or translation becomes available to the community as an Official LTI Media Release made possible by everyone involved in its production.

English Proofreading Notes

The first step is for the English Proofreading Team to carefully ensure the integrity of both the English transcription contents, as well as the accuracy of its timestamps.

Where possible, we will contact the original video uploader and change the timestamps there. This will allow for the adjustment of timestamps for all languages in one shot. We can also provide them with the now-officially proofread English transcription, which will allow for the best starting point for all future translations of that item.

If contact/cooperation with the original uploader is not possible, we will have to use the info in the Piratepad to make these adjustments to the Repository copy just before activating the Translation Proofreading for that project. In order to later bring in additional completed translations from the original working location, we will have to use a custom script designed to copy timestamps from one SRT file to another.

Yes, we are very aware that this is a rather convoluted approach. It very much highlights the need for us to all work together much better than we have in the past. We are currently developing a solution that should make all of this very easy to handle in the future. This page will be updated once this new approach is well tested and put into use.

Translation Proofreading Notes

Once the English proofreaders have completed their tasks and the timestamps of Imported translations have been adjusted to match the corrected timings, the video will be opened up to all Translation Proofreading Teams for those languages that have completed their translations. Any translations that are still in progress will not be brought into the Repository copy until they are ready for this step. Language Coordinators should create a forum ToDo as soon as their team's translation is ready to be included for final proofreading.
