For now, we can use this page to work out the 'flow' that we need from the PMS that's being developed for the Linguistic Team. Once the PMS is put into service, the page can be repurposed to describe its functions and provide instructions for getting the most out of it. I'll start by posting some thoughts and discussion snippets I've had on the subject, to be sorted out as we progress.

It has to handle lookup of both users & projects, and the results must show all of the info needed to join or watch those projects/users in action, wherever they are working.

Setting up the database

Tasks (individual multimedia projects) are entered into the system first, then allowing volunteers to self-assign themselves to the projects individually, with occasional updates from those members as they progress. Members need to fill out their own info when they initially sign up as a member.

Info needed for project tasks

Note: Other than the self-assigning of members to a task (handled dynamically), these database items are only editable by PMS admins to protect the info from possible vandalism. A separate Edit control should bring up only the items that are italicized, since these are the only items that will change over time.

Also note that there are some ideas for configuration control of tasks that appear very interesting at the ProjectFork site

  • Title
  • Milestone (lists tasks that have already been completed)
  • Description
  • Progress (if used, will need to be updated as reports come in)
  • Priority
  • Location of original
  • Length
  • Size
  • Duration (if applicable)
  • Current location
  • Responsible persons (who is currently working on moving it forward?)
  • Current section "Responsible Persons" are working on/completed (Like what chapter or what range of time stamps depending on Media Type.)
  • Previous location(s) (provide access to where milestones were reached)
  • Comments (allow members to leave relevant comments about the item for others)

Info needed from members

  • Username
  • Password (never shown)
  • Repeat Password
  • Email address (for confirmation, new item notification in your chosen interest(s), password retrieval, etc.)
  • Project Interests (Transcribing, Proofreading, Translating, Translation Proofreading, Technical Team, cook, bartender, etc.)
  • Contributions (dynamically generated from database info)
  • Language (if applicable)
  • Current Availability (currently self-assigned to a project - dynamically generated from database info)
  • Capcha (or similar)
  • Stay logged in (uses cookie for subsequent auto-login)
  • Also needed is a method to allow members to retrieve their passwords, if lost

PMS GUI

My vision for this has the user presented with a basic bubble map, with the current 'selection' centered and related areas surrounding it. Selecting a surrounding bubble causes that one to move to the center and related areas to gather around it. A click directly on any 'centered' bubble would take them to the actual working area represented by that bubble's title.
